Azerbaijan assessed as one of rapidly developing countries in ICT sphere

The International Union of Electric Communication drew conclusions of the five year study of the ICT development level of 154 countries in period from 2002 until 2007. Azerbaijan, along with Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, China, Luxembourg and Romania, is noted in the rating as a country with the most rapidly developing economy in the ICT sense. The said countries managed to maximally improve the main indicators of the past five years.

Thus, Azerbaijan, receiving 2.71 points in the overall rating, moved from 100 in 2002 to 14 positions ahead to the 86th place. The report especially notes that the country took the 86th place because in 2002 the ICT indicators in Azerbaijan were at a law level and significant growth was attained through these five years. Notably, the opportunities of the mobile communication and access to Internet, reforms implemented in the country created favorable conditions for the further development of the sphere.

The specialists also stressed the government's intention to make ICT sector second by importance in the economy after the oil sector- "the government takes a number of measures, aimed at modernization and restructuring the sphere, that got about 170,000,000 local investments just in 2007", says the report.

Countries that attained greater achievements in the ICT sphere are in Norther Europe. The exception is the Korean Republic. Sweden is a leader in line with the new index of ICT development. It is followed by Korea, Denmark, Netherlands, Iceland and Norway.
