Abu Bakr Mosque under threat of new terror acts

03 November 2008 [17:16] - TODAY.AZ
One of the factors which ruled out the activity of Abu Bakr mosque is that the law-enforcement bodies received information about planning of new terrorist attacks there.
"The police undertake preventive measures", says the the notice sent by Narimanov District Police Office to the district court to review its decision about re-opening of Abu Bakr mosque, APA reports. The notice, by Police Chief Muradali Babayev, said that the court’s extramural decision could not be considered appropriately because it was made not taking into consideration the existed situation around the mosque, operational conditions, civil rights of the population living nearby, their legal interests and numerous appeals to the relative government organizations, as well as situation of public order.

The mosque cannot continue its activity in accordance with the law on police, which restricts and bans entrance to the territories and buildings in case of threat to the public order and people’s security).

The police chief said that they couldn’t attend the court proceedings for some important reasons and asked the court to eliminate its decision and to review it again.

Lawyer of Narimanov District’s religious community and Abu Bakr mosque Javanshir Suleymanov appealed on Monday to the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, head of the President’s administration Ramiz Mehdiyev, chief of the department of the President’s Office for work with the law-enforcement bodies Fuad Alasgarov, OSCE Baku Office and embassies of several countries in Baku, informing about police reports on planning of the terrorists attacks in Abu Bakr and impossibility of its re-opening for this reason. The lawyer asked the law-enforcement bodies to confirm these reports and to prevent spread of information confusing the people.

Press officer of the Interior Ministry Sadig Gozalov told APA indeed law-enforcement and interior bodies received information about planning of new terrorist attacks in Abu Bakr mosque by the extremist forces and they undertook necessary measures to prevent it. "We can not make the details public. According to the law, organizing and conducting of operational searches, as well as operational reports is a confidential information. Even tactics of organizing the measures and their methods were not included into the subject of prosecutor’s control".
