17 October 2008 [17:38] - TODAY.AZ
The Supreme Court of Azerbaijan has received a cassation appeal of imprisoned editor-in-chief of the Tolshi sado newspaper Novruzali Mamedov, said chairman of the Committee for protection of Novruzali Mamedov's rights Hilal Mamedov.

He said defender of the editor-in-chief Ramiz Mamedov filed a claim to the supreme court against the decision of the preliminary session of the Baku Appellate Court about non-conduction of court investigation.

"The claim fixes the need to hold a judicial investigation. In this connection, the consideration of Mamedov's appeal has been put off for an indefinite period", said Mamedov.

It should be noted that by the court verdict, Novruzali Mamedov is found guilty under article 274 (high treason) and sentenced to 10 years in prison, while newspaper employee Elman Guliyev will have to serve 6 years in jail.

Novruzali Mamedov was detained on February 3 of 2007. The Yasamal district court decided to arrest him for 15 days. On February 17 the chief of department was charged under article 274 (high treason) of the Criminal Code. Elman Guliyev is charged under the same article.
