Azerbaijani National Security Ministry detains former Interior Ministry's officials, engaged in burglary

Reports say that from 1998 to 2008 there took place a number of armed assaults against the exchange offices, as well as against the exchange officers, when large sums were taken away from them under a threat of a gun.

These grave crimes caused a wide resonance in public and brought a negative shade into the process of combating crimes in the country.

Though criminal cases were launched under articles 181.2.1, 181.2.3, 181.2.4, 181.2.5 and 181.3.2 (criminal assault), the criminals have not been exposed yet.

For ensuring the operative disclosure of the crimes, on August 26 of 2008, the prosecutor general's office of Azerbaijan empowered the Ministry of National Security to take the control of the crimes.

After analyzing the details of the crimes, a plan of operative search was worked out and conducted to ensure interests and security of Azerbaijan's economy.

It was revealed that victims of over 20 crimes, committed in different regions of Baku, worked in the trade center of Bina and a number of banks.

Moreover, the Ministry revealed that methods and means of preparations for crimes and their conduction, were executed by persons, who are well familiar with the procedures of operative search and principles of holding investigation.

On September 30 of 2008 the Ministry held a complex operation to detain the criminals.

The detained were:

Mehti Miraliyev, born in 1962, former high ranking officer of the Yasamal district police, department of combat with terrorism and organized crime, Narimanov district police, former chief of the 18th police station and former deputy chief of department of criminal search of the Yasamal district police station.

Iraj Nasrullayev, 1962, former authorized operative of the department of combat with organized crime and of the Shusha department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Ceyhun Garayev, born in 1971, was detained together with them as a suspected person. A TT gun was found on him.

These three persons gave testimonies, according to which it became clear that beginning from 1998, the group has committed more than 20 assaults against the exchange points, mostly dislocated in the Bina trade center. A large sum was stolen during the assaults.

Mehti Amiraliyev and Iraj Nasrullayev confessed that during the assaults they used experience, obtained while they worked in the interior bodies, particularly methods of revealing and secret persecution of definite persons.

According to the Ministry of National Security and prosecutor general's office, the operative search and investigation are going on.
