One of Azerbaijan’s largest lakes drained

One of the largest lakes in Azerbaijan – Hajigabul Lake evaporated fully and was erased from the map.
Local environmentalist conducted last monitoring in the lake on July 29 and forecasted shrinking of 8.4 -square meter lake, APA Mil-Mugan bureau reported.

The lake was fed by the Kura River in flooding period, but during the Soviet time water was pumped to the lake because of prevention the natural stream. Later the pumping works were suspended leaving the lake without water.

Recent hot weather accelerated lake evaporating and finally it was completely drained. An increase in salinity is observed in the lake-bed and strong stink spread around the lake once polluted with the canalization water and slops. The third Shirvan Territorial Office of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources refused to comment the situation, Executive Director of the National Environment Monitoring Department of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Mammadhuseyn Muslumov told APA that they had begun monitoring in the territory a few days before and would complete researching in the near future. Measures to be done in the next phase will be determined by results of the monitoring.
