Semen Ikhiilov: "Explosion in the Abu Bekir mosque could have aimed at frustrating the upcoming presidential elections"

20 August 2008 [11:44] - TODAY.AZ
"I am deeply resented over the terrorist act committed in the Mosque", said head of the community of Mountain Jews of Azerbaijan Semen Ikhiilov, commenting on the recent explosion in the Abu Bekir Mosque. He extended his deep condolences to the relatives and friends of the killed persons and wished soonest recovery to those injured.

Ikhiilov expressed confidence that religious people, who deeply believe in God, will never commit such a crime.

"Therefore, these people's being really religious is doubtful. Religious fanaticism can be spoken of in this case. Anyway, this incident damages the positive background of stability, prevailing in our city, which has not witnessed such events for long", said he, adding, however, that this will not damage the tolerance, which is on the highest level in our country.

He voiced concern that the act could be prompted by a certain policy of creating an unpleasant background for the upcoming presidential campaign.

"I do not think that there are forces in the country, which are able to frustrate the elections. It could happen 5-10 years ago. Now there is a firm stability in the country and the state has enough power to avert the attempt to undermine this stability. I am sure that nobody will manage it", said Ikhiilov.

He added in conclusion that our president has no rivals and it will be like that for many years.

"Azerbaijani people and our community need Ilham Aliyev. As for the terrorist act, I am sure that the law enforcement bodies will be able to investigate this evil act, involving separate groupings, which regard themselves as religious. As is known, terrorists have no nation, race or religion", said he.
