15 August 2008 [13:18] - TODAY.AZ
Co-chairs of the World Azerbaijanis Congress expressed concern over the termination of the Urmia lake, said co-chairs Sabir Rustamkhanly and Firudin Parvizniya.
As is noted, the Urmia lake, located in West Azerbaijan is subjected to termination, according to Iranian press.

"Particularly, the water level in the lake has declined through the past 13 years. In turn, this caused serious damage to the ecological system of the lake and the living creatures of the lake are under threat.

Specialists consider that if definite measures are not taken today, Urmia lake will disappear. Moreover, the whole territory of the lake may turn into a desert and alkaline lands.

Currently the desertion covers about 150 hectares of lands and no one can use them now. Earlier the specialists reported about the fact of the lake termination, but no one paid any attention to it" says the statement.

In this connection, the World Azerbaijanis Congress calls on all international structures, Green Movements, public organizations and Azerbaijani representatives to take due measures in order to prevent desertion of the Urmia lake.

The congress co-chairs also appeal to Azerbaijanis, residing in South Azerbaijan, with a request to voice their protest on the said issue.
