Pesticides-substances, hazardous for human health, have been revealed in the underground water springs in Oghuz, which is to be supplied to Baku by the Oghuz-Qabala-Baku water pipe, being under construction, said chairman of Ecomed NGO Namik Rzayev, according to Novosti-Azerbaijan.
"Pesticides are substances, widely used in agriculture to terminate insects. After the USSR collapse and crisis in agriculture, large volumes of these pesticides have been lying in an open air for many years in the regions, which are to supply water to Baku ", said Rzayev at a press conference on Thursday.
He said through these years pesticides dissolved and were absorbed through soil into ground waters and underground springs became contaminated.
"As pesticides are too persistent and remain effective for a long time, they are too dangerous for Baku residents", said the ecologist.
He also stressed that the construction of the water pipe has a negative influence on environment, as well.
"For example, during construction it was necessary to take preventive measures against negative influence on environment, which has not been done. In the result, the upper fruitful later of soil collapsed on large areas", said he.
According to the head of Ecomed, works should have been stopped in places, where the objects of historical and cultural concerns were revealed, and archaeologists should have been addressed to preserve these objects. "The monitoring showed that the contractors, conducting the said work, did not take any measures", continued he.
He said scarce tugai woods on the Geychay river bank suffered in the result of the water pipe laying.
"Moreover, no enlightenment work was held among population about negative influence", concluded Rzayev.
