Prisoners detainment conditions to be improved in Azerbaijan

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has ratified amendments to legislation, ensuring improvement of prisoners detainment conditions by its decree, reports Interfax-Azerbaijan with reference to the presidential administration.
The said amendments to the Code of punishment execution and the Procedural Criminal Code were introduced by Milli Medjlis on June 24 for expanding rights and liberties of prisoners and are aimed to improve detainment conditions.

In line with these amendments, prisoners will have a right for education, censorship in correspondence will be restricted, deduction from wages is cut, financial and housing state provision for prisoners' detainment is improved.

The number of telephone calls of prisoners, meetings, received banderols and parcels will be raised.

For example, in line with the previous edition of the legislation, prisoners had a right for 10 minute telephone calls 12 times a year and lifers 6 times a year. Now prisoners may speak by the phone 15 minutes 52 times a year and lifers 24 times a year.

The monthly allowance in trade establishments, locating in the area of penitentiaries, has been raised to AZN 25-30.
