21 May 2008 [10:29] - TODAY.AZ
APA interview with chief of the Press Service for the Interior Ministry Police Colonel Sadikh Gozalov.
-What caused the detention of Vugar Alakbarov?

-Businessman Kanan Guliyev complained to the Interior Ministry that Vugar Alakbarov extorted 10 thousand USD from him and assaulted him and his driver and took away his car. Vugar Alakbarov was detained when he received money from Guliyev. His friends Ramal Amanov and Matlab Badalov were together with him. They were released later.

-Ramal Amanov said he had been tortured in detention facility …

-He lied about the tortures to avoid the responsibility. They attempted to resist police officers during the operations. Their claims about tortures are groundless. Earlier there were rare cases, but Minister Ramil Usubov ordered to lift such cases and police officers who committed tortures were punished.

-What caused the wide resonance of the detention of sportsmen?

-Unfortunately, some forces try to use this issue in their interests and to politicize it and arise public dissatisfaction. Azerbaijan is a legal state and everybody has equal responsibility before the law. The investigation gave legal evaluation to Alakbarov’s dangerous actions and its results.

-Is there any other information about Alakbarov’s other criminal actions?

-Alakbarov extorted from Guliyev 1500 and 3500 USD in different times as if he helped to the criminals in jails. Kanan Guliyev confirmed it. It was clarified that Vugar Alakbarov had close relations with criminals in jails and participated in several criminal wrangles in Russia.
