Kamran Imanov, chief of department for Icheri Sheher reserve, has commented on the information about removal of the Old City from the list of UNESCO world heritage, which astonished the society.
"I would like to say that this was an unfortunate mistake.
The thing is that Icheri Sheher is included into the list of world heritage. However, it is also on the negative part of this list, which includes objects of world heritage under threat of extinction.
This means that UNESCO implies additional measures and control of problems in protection of this area, which is already on the list of world heritage.
According to the news, Icheri Sheher will be completely removed from the list of World Heritage, which is a mistake.
UNESCO Secretary General Koitiro Matsuura meant the following: Icheri Sheher will be removed from the list of objects of world heritage, which are under threat of extinction.
The motivation of the said announcement of UNESCO Secretary General was that owing to positive changes in the country, the government of Azerbaijan and its citizens can protect Icheri Sheher themselves.
I would like to underline that UNESCO Secretary General meant removal of Icheri Sheher not from the world heritage list but from the list of objects which are under threat of extinction", Kamran Imanov told Day.Az.
