OSCE holds seminar on regional environment and security in Baku

A seminar "Environment and Safety Initiative" is being held by initiative of the OSCE Baku office.
The event is attended by representatives of the due state structures and NGOs of Azerbaijan along with OSCE representatives.

The event participants noted that similar seminars were held in Tbilisi and Yerevan.

Hose Luis Herrero-Ansola, head of the OSCE Baku office, noted speaking in front of the meeting participants that it is necessary to undertake joint measures for resolution of ecological problems in the region, such as desertion and pollution of the Caspian Sea.

"There are political problems in the South Caucasus, which hamper the resolution of ecological issues. It is necessary to go beyond the politics and implement transborder projects and hold a monitoring", Herrero-Ansola.

Bruno Pueza, UN resident-coordinator in Azerbaijan, announced that the conflicts in the region have a negative impact on the environment.

"20% of Azerbaijani lands and uncontrolled in the result of Nagorno Karabakh conflict. Rivers are not used properly and polluted, forests and plants are cut. If has a negative influence on the residents of adjacent areas", Puezo said.

At the same time, he noted that the Azerbaijani authorities should use country's development for environmental protection and evaluated the state program on ecology for 2006-2011.
