Women account for 51% of population in Azerbaijan

According to the official data, 52% of women live in urban areas.
The life expectancy for women stands at 75.1 years, or women outlive men by an average of around 5.4 years.

The fertility rate for women stood at 59%, or the ratio of births to fertile women was 2 to 1 on average in Azerbaijan.

The female births accounted for 26% of the total births in 2007. Fatima was the most popular name for girls.

Fidan also increased in popularity in urban areas, with more girls sharing this name, is popular choice for girls in 2007 while Nermin was the most popular in rural areas.

The most popular names chosen by parents also included Nazrin, Zahra, Nuray, Aytaj, Aysel and Leyla.

The top statistical body said women are employed in almost all the sectors of economy and the number of women in work rose to 49.5% of the economically active population, compared to 47.7% in 2003.
Women make up 71% of school teachers, 73% of technical vocational schools, 47% of universities and 61% of doctors.

745 in 1 000 women aged above 15 are educated to the medium or higher level.

Girls constitute 48% of students at comprehensive schools, 70% at technical vocational schools and almost half at universities.
28% of postgraduate and doctorate students are women in the country.

50% of the scientific workers are women. The number of women with doctorate rose 42% and women with the degree of candidacy of science rose 12, compared to 2003.

12 of the correspondent members and 3 of academicians at the Azerbaijan National Academy of Science are female.

Women also comprise 11.2% of MPs at Milli Majlis, 39% of civil servants, 15% of businesspeople and 20% of those who are engaged in sport at sport halls.

Women head 21% of households across the country.
