British pedophile detained in Azerbaijan to be extradited to Great Britain in three months

The due announcement was made by lawyer Fikret Mirzoyev, defending rights of Patrick O'Brian in the Sabail district court due to selection of a preventive measure in a form of arrest.

The defender noted that he will not protect the foreigner in the future, as there is no need for that. "He has not committed any crime in Azerbaijan. He has just been detained in Azerbaijan based on a request of British law-enforcement bodies. He has been provided with a defender on basis of legislation when an arrest was chosen for him as a preventive measure", Mirzoyev said.

He also noted that the British citizen will not go on trial in Azerbaijan within 3 months. "Patrick O'Brian will go on trial under laws of Great Britain. Therefore, a work is carried out on the diplomatic level to transfer him to the British government".

The defender said, O'Brian will be extradited within three months: "A preventive measure in a form of arrest for the term of three months has been selected for a person, who committed this crime, under Azerbaijan's legislation.

This does not mean that Patrick O'Brian will be extradited to his country upon expiration of this term. If the issue is settled by diplomatic ways in the near future, he will be transfered to his country. These talks may complete within 15-20 days.

It should be noted that under the legislation of Azerbaijan, when a citizen of a foreign country beyond the CIS is detained in Azerbaijan, the issue of his extradition is settled in court.

As is reported, P.O'Brian was on the wanted list of the international police due to sexual crimes committed in his country in 1975-1977. He was detained on February 26 of 2008 and a preventive measure in a form of arrest has been selected.
