27 February 2008 [17:53] - TODAY.AZ
“Human rights activists, who state that Azerbaijanis released from captivity have been arrested, are political dilettantes.

We call on them to get closely acquainted with these facts,” Ilham Mammadov, first deputy military prosecutor of Azerbaijan, head of the joint investigation group of General Prosecutor’s Office, National Security Ministry and Interior Ministry told APA.

He said only 26 out of 1391 released Azerbaijani captives were held accountable by Azerbaijani law-enforcement bodies and their crimes have been completely proved.

Head of the investigation group said few of these persons were proved to cooperate with Armenian intelligence service when they were in captivity and they were convicted.

“As a result of the investigation 29 Armenians were accused of especially torturing the captured Azerbaijanis and search has been launched for them. These Armenians also participated in killing Azerbaijanis,” he said.

Ilham Mammadov called on the rights defenders to be unbiased and just concerning this issue.

“Political dilettantes play with fate of the released Azerbaijani captives. If they are interested in human rights and freedoms, they can meet with these persons and get information about the forms and methods of tortures,” he said.

4471 people went missing during the first Karabakh war. 3591 of them are servicemen and 880 are civilians. According to the witness testimonies, 753 out of 4471 missing persons are considered to have been taken captive and hostage. 451 people were killed in Armenian captivity. 365 of them are men and 86 are women.
