BP, Azerbaijan Academy of Science to sponsor initiatives in education

The projects aim to assist to the next generation of geological scientists to raise their skills in the country, as well as assistance to stable development of industrial potential of Azerbaijan on the international level.

As part of the Memorandum of mutual understanding BP and the Azerbaijan National Academy of Science agreed to implement the project of basin modeling, so that  to improve awareness of onshore and offshore hydrocarbon reserves. The project will also intensify researches and involve experts, which will promote training of Masters of sciences in the sphere of oil geology and development of academic potential.

Moreover, BP will assist to the organization of summer geological trainings for students, to be held by the leading experts of the international level in the sphere of sedimentology and structural geology.

In this period, BP in cooperation with its international partner in the sphere of education will assist to the Academy: it will assess needs for the program of training of Masters of sciences in the sphere of oil geology and long-term existence of the faculty of geological science, corresponding to international academic and ethical standards, which will further act on the basis of self-repayment.

The project intended for a year will include creation of a new group of basin modeling on the basis of the Institute of Geology under the National Academy of Science by using experience of the leading scientists of Azerbaijan in the sphere of geological sciences.

This group will use existent well parameters and materials of seismic shooting for offshore and onshore areas of Absheron for the development of a complex model of the basin of the region.

BP plans to use $550,000 to finance project of development of the basin model, which will include software, as well as equipment, honoraries to project consultants, trainings specialists and other activities. The Azerbaijan National Academy of Science will provide assistance of local specialists for the project implementation.

"We have long financed various projects in the sphere of education, both in cooperation with our partners and independently", president of BP-Azerbaijan Bill Schreder said.

"More than  30 citizens of Azerbaijan received grants for post-graduate studies on geology, geophysics, oil industry and development of oil and gas fields to the leading high schools of the world in the framework of the program of post-graduate studies of graduates of high schools, focusing on oil and gas, financed by BP and its partners since 2001. This and other initiatives aim to assist to economic and social development through enabling talented young citizens of Azerbaijan to encourage prosperity and stable development of their country. While moving forward, we will try to use this potential, which does exist in Azerbaijan".
