Wolf hunting likely to be permitted in Azerbaijan

22 January 2008 [14:07] - TODAY.AZ
An increase in the number of wolves has recently been observed in the villages bordering Iran and the Harami plain, as reported by local residents.

Wolves often attack farms and damage the cattle.

Residents of the Boyuk Bahmanli village killed several wolves last week. According to them, no attacks on people have been reported yet.

Ramazan Ismayilov, head of the Azerbaijani Hunters Association, said that the number of wolves in Azerbaijan increased within the past years.

Ismayilov said Azerbaijan joined European Convention on the prohibition of wolf hunting, and, therefore, hunters were prohibited to hunt these animals.

“Those who hunt wolves are fined and even arrested,” he said.

Ismayilov noted that the residents of several regions appeal regarding wolves’ harming their farms, and their attacks on people.

“We have appealed to the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and asked them to raise the issue of allowing wolf hunting in the Parliament. Azerbaijan should quit this Convention,” he said.

Ismayilov noted that wolves are mostly observed in Absheron, Shamakhi, Bilasuvar, Lenkeran, Sheki, Zagatala and frontline regions.
