Russia provides humanitarian aid to Azerbaijani refugees

10 January 2008 [12:49] - TODAY.AZ
The Russian government has sent humanitarian aid in the amount of $2 million to the refugees and IDP of Azerbaijan.

The aid, consisting of foodstuffs, has already been delivered to the country. On this occasion, Ali Gasanov, Deputy Prime Minister, chairman of the State Committee for Affairs of Refugees and IDP and the Republican Commission on International humanitarian aid met with  the Russian ambassador to Azerbaijan Vasili Istratov and the representative of the UN World Food Program in our country, Lin Miller.

Ali Gasanov highly appreciated this step and noted that the humanitarian aid comprising 2,016 tons of flour and 218 tons of vegetable oil is Russia's first contribution  to the UN World Food Program. As the economic strength of Azerbaijan is rising, our country is among the leading countries of the world for the GDP growth rates. Therefore, the assistance of international humanitarian organizations to our country is gradually reducing. Therefore, Our country provides more assistance to people, driven away from their homes. Certainly, Azerbaijan will soon provide humanitarian assistance to poor countries as a donor-country.

He noted that Russia is the first among the CIS states to provide such aid to Azerbaijan and expressed his deep gratitude in this connection.

Russian ambassador to Azerbaijan Vasili Istratov announced that the humanitarian aid has been provided under support of Russia's Ministry of Emergency Situations. Noting that Azerbaijan has suffered more from the USSR collapse as compared to other former union countries he voiced hope that his country will continue rendering assistance.

The representative of the UN World Food Program in Azerbaijan Lin Miller announced that the humanitarian aid will be rendered to the refugees and IDP of the Shirvanly village of Barda.

It was noted that the aid will do for 4 months.
