$600 million needed for mine clearing of Azerbaijani occupied lands after their release

19 December 2007 [10:40] - TODAY.AZ
“Azerbaijan needs $600 million to clear its occupied lands from mines and unexploded ordnance”, Nazim Ismayilov, chief of the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) said.
According to him, the due estimation was made by results of a joint research, carried out by the government of Azerbaijan and experts of the World Bank in the framework of the "Great Return" program.

“Our calculation in line with international practice shows that 4 % (500-600 million sq.m) of our occupied lands were polluted with mines and unexploded ordnance,” he said.

The chief of the agency noted that an area of 14-18 million sq.m. is currently being cleared by the Agency. ANAMA will intensify its work following the release of the lands.

The assets allocated by donors for financing mine clearing operations are declining each year. The government of Azerbaijan provided 10 % and donors 90% of financing in 2001. Yet, the indicators are 45 and 55 %, respectively, this year.

The Azerbaijani government plans to provide 75 % and donors 25% of financing in 2008.

ANAMA was established in 1999 and initiated mine clearing operations in 2001.
