Baku hosts national conference “World Fit for Children”

Respecting children’s rights is one of the main principles of the action plan between the European Union (EU) and Azerbaijan, EU special representative to Azerbaijan Alan Waddams told in an address at the National Conference “World Fit for Children” in Baku on the 5th anniversary of the Resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly.
Mr.Waddams said EU-promoted reforms should be supported by civil society in Azerbaijan. Reminding that EU office will be opened in Azerbaijan by the end of the year the diplomat said the mission aims to protect democracy and human rights.

Council of Europe Secretary General’s Special Representative to Azerbaijan Denis Bribosia said the Council of Europe calls for the member states to allocate more resources for the protection of children’s rights. Special Representative also informed about the Council of Europe’s three year programme “Building a Europe for and with children”. 

Representatives of Azerbaijani Child Parliament Taleh Aliyev and Farida Aliyeva said that the Parliament was established a year ago and the analogical parliaments are operating in 40 world countries. They said that Child Parliament aims to involve people who are under 18 to take active part in the society. 

“Child Parliament is participating in the debate of problems rising concern, it has committees for various fields, and Azerbaijani MPs participate in the debates carried out in the Child Parliament once a year. The most worrying problems are involvement of children to labour exploitation, its harming their health and preventing from education, removing girls from education because of early marriages. We are initiating slogan “Let’s stand against violence against children”.
