17 April 2007 [21:05] - TODAY.AZ
"Mirza Sakit, correspondent of Azadliq newspaper kept in the detention place #14 was sent to punishment cell for propaganda against the state," said Elchin Behbudov, chief of the Azerbaijani Committee against Torture.

"Chief of the jail Ershad Hasanov told me that though Mirza Sakit said he has health problems and demanded to be removed to medical center in Boyuk Shor doctors did not find any health problems. The prisoner later went on hunger strike and started propaganda against the state. Therefore, he was sent to punishment cell for 10 days. The chief said that Mirza Sakit remained there two days and the chief released him. The jail chief said the prisoner is receiving out-patient treatment at present," he said.

The committee chief also said that he will continue investigations about Mirza Sakit and try to meet with him.

Mirza Sakit's brother Ganimat Zahid told the APA that the jail chief told a lie.

"Mirza Sakit can make critical statements not against the state but against the government. Everyone has the right to do it. A prisoner is not sent to punishment cell for criticizing and hunger strike," he told the APA.
