Press Council to check whether journalists have employment agreements

07 April 2007 [11:27] - TODAY.AZ
"A number of journalists in different editorial offices have been dismissed as they demand employment agreement. Editorial offices' leaderships rejected employment contract requests by journalists," Azerbaijani Press Council Chairman Aflatun Amashov stated.

Aflatun Amashov said only 15 percent of journalists enjoy these rights. He said Press Council will conduct monitoring in editorial offices, APA reports.

"It means most journalists will not receive pension in Azerbaijan. The employment contract is regulated by legislation and it depends much on journalist. We have information that even some journalists are not able to receive their wages. One reason for that is lack of employment contracts. On the other hand, we are powerless to prove that whether journalists worked in mentioned editorial offices or not. I think first of all, journalists themselves should help us to control the process."
