02 April 2007 [22:01] - TODAY.AZ
Relatives of the hunger-striking lifers of Gobustan jail and a group of human rights defenders held a press conference.

Shakir Rzakhanov's mother Muslumat Rzakhanova, Elbrus Ibrahimov's mother Mehluge Ibrahimova and others said that their children want to draw president's attention to their problem by the hunger strike.

"As Azerbaijani legislation has been amended, their punishment should be commuted to 15-20-year of imprisonment," they said.

Human rights defender Elchin Behbudov said he will appeal to the president on the prisoners' hunger strike.

"I will ask Ilham Aliyev to receive me and inform him of the problem," he said.

Chingiz Ganizade, chief of the Committee for Democracy and Human Rights offered that all human rights defenders should appeal to the president, Supreme Court and law enforcement bodies.

Rights defender Eldar Zeynalov noted that PACE co-rapporteurs on Azerbaijan Andres Herkel and Tony Lloyd also agree with the demands of the lifers on hunger strike in Gobustan jail.

Human rights defender Saadat Bananayarly said they met with the protesters and asked them to stop the action.

"We consider that the protesters have achieved their goals," she said, APA reports.
