Second outbreak of bird flu suspected in Turkey's southeast

15 February 2007 [13:32] - TODAY.AZ
Although the deadly strain of avian influenza was confirmed in poultry in the Gercus township of Batman, no cases of the virus in humans have been confirmed.

Suspicious deaths among domestic poultry in the Silvan district of the south eastern province of Diyarbakir have sparked concerns over a new outbreak of avian influenza.

The suspected outbreak comes days after the presence of the virus was confirmed in the nearby province of Batman.

Local authorities have declared a quarantine zone around the village of Akcayir and three hamlets in Silvan, due to suspicious deaths among fowl.

Samples taken from the dead birds have been sent to be tested for bird flu. NTV MSNBC
