Arif Malikov: "I refuse if elected"

08 November 2006 [22:27] - TODAY.AZ
"If I am elected Chairman of the Composers' Union I will refuse. 16 years ago in 1990 when Composers’ Union Congress was held I went to Moscow, in order not to be elected chairman," said famous Azerbaijani composer Arif Malikov.

"I have never wanted to hold a post. I was made a number of offers by former President Heydar Aliyev and others but refused," the composer told the APA.

He noted that the Composers' Union does not obey the law. "The congress is to be held every 5 years. Why the Composers' Union does not hold a congress? The last congress was held 16 years ago in 1990. We had a note shop and it was very popular in the Soviet Union. At the moment we have no such a shop. Azerbaijan Composers' Union is responsible for this. All the problems concerning music have to be solved by it. The level of the Composers' Union should be raised. I do not want any post. I think I have to teach young composers. Why should I give up this?" the composer said.
