AzTV wants to participate in Eurovision

22 October 2006 [17:11] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijan might debut in the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest.

Still, though, the AzTV (Azerbaijan Television) is not an active member of the UER, and is expected to obtain this status, in January, 2007. Arzu Abdullayev, the director of the AzTV said to partner website to eurovision-spain.com, told that they received an invitation on the part of the EBU to participate in the Helsinki Eurovision edition.

Abdullayev told eurovision-spain that they still haven't decide whether they will participate and that the specific music department will decide. Azerbaijan has a population of scanty eight million inhabitants and it has obtained the independence from the USSR in 1991. According to information of the European Parliament, it has possesses a democracy in ascent but the cleptocracia abounds, or what is the same thing, the high corruption in all the levels of the State.

As we have mentioned, with the logical assumptio that the Athens Eurovision countries will participate in Helsinki and with Czech Republic, Serbia, Montenegro and Austria, we already reached 41 countries. Azerbaijan will be the 42nd country and still there is no clarification what will happen in this case since it was EBU's limit to have for Helsinki, a maximum of 40 countries. Most likely scenario is to have a draw among new comers. But then again, two more countries will not be a big problem for a semifinal.
