A new mikva for Jews in Baku

03 July 2006 [19:25] - TODAY.AZ
On the eve of Shabbat, the head of the Jewish Community "Jews of Azerbaijan" and Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi of Azerbaijan Meir Brook installed a new mikva.

The inauguration ceremony involved more than 50 members of Azerbaijani Jewish communities, who were excited to see "the place where water gathers." The new mikva of Baku was designed to meet all the requirements of Jewish law and customs and is a delight for all Jews of Azerbaijan. The essential part of mikva – the pool – is laid with beautiful tiles the same color as the marble interior of the building. The mikva has two pools connected with each other, separate shower rooms located adjacent to the ritual bath hall, a heating system and a special filtration system made in Israel, designed for purifying rain water.

Addressing to the community members, Rabbi Brook reminded them that the ritual bath is essential for observing the laws of the family purity. "These laws are so important that a community is required build a mikva even before building a synagogue. And now we are proud to announce that Jews of Baku have both a new synagogue and a new mikva!"
