"RUH" announces monitoring of press in May

"The situation on freedom of expression and press in Azerbaijan was not so pleasant last month, the requirements of the law on getting information were not complied with," "RUH" Committee for Journalist Defense states.

According to APA, there were five court proceedings against journalists this month.

Former Chairman of Sumgayit city police department Sevindik Safarov and the Azerbaijan Pedagogical University sued "Azadliq" newspaper, Odlar Yurdu University President Ahmad Valiyev sued "Yeni Musavat" newspaper and the State Oil Company officer Sahib Ahmadov sued the "525'ci gezet".

The Court of Appeal kept in force the Nizami district court's decision on imprisoning Samir Adigozel, editor-in-chief of "Boyuk Millet" newspaper for one year in prison. Two journalists were detained last month.

"Yeni Khabar" newspaper chief editor Faig Balayev was detained for bribe taking and "Khalg Trubunal" newspaper chief editor Sharif Salmanov for suspicion of taking foreigners hostage.

The National TV and Radio Council closed Khachmaz TV after the decision on not renewing license to the media.

The newspaper "Ayna-Zerkalo" correspondent Rustem Mikayilli was injured during the scandal in a football match between Neftchi and Karabakh teams last month. Two police officers used violence against him.

"Bizim Yol" newspaper chief editor Baheddin Haziyev was also assaulted by unidentified persons last month.

RUH appealed to the Interior Ministry to take action about both facts.
