WHO Director General calls for continued vigilance after recent outbreak of avian influenza

The Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Lee Jong-Wook visited Azerbaijan from 25 to 26 April 2006.

As APA reports, during the visit, Dr. Lee met with the President, Prime Minister, Minister of Health and Mrs. Mehriban Aliyeva, President of Heydar Aliyev Foundation.

WHO Office in Azerbaijan informed that Dr. Lee expressed his satisfaction with regard to the collaboration between the Ministry of Health and the WHO team during the outbreak of avian influenza in Azerbaijan.

"The outbreak was a significant challenge for Azerbaijan, and the response of the health authorities was very good. However all countries in the region need to remain vigilant for signs of disease in wild and domestic birds," he said. Dr. Lee stressed that that continuing efforts were needed to enhance the countries’ defenses against a possible influenza are critical.

Mr. Lee also visited the Research Institute of Lung Diseases of Azerbaijan and the department in which the affected patients were hospitalized during the outbreak.

Future collaboration between Azerbaijan and WHO was also on the agenda during the visit. In the years to come, WHO will provide technical assistance to strengthening the country's health system, with particular focus on health system financing, pharmaceutics, public health capacity building and disaster preparing.
