01 May 2006 [08:14] - TODAY.AZ
Deputy Minister of Transport Musa Panahov told journalists that although Baku Transport Department had taken some measures to prevent individual increase of fares in urban transportation but any bus drivers raise that individually.

Mr. Panahov said that this issue was on agenda and Tariff Council made a decision to prevent increase of fares, APA reports.

"At the same time, it is being monitored to determine how much the fares should be. Fares shouldn’t be increased individually and should be economically grounded. If the efficiency of transportation is increased, there will be no need for fare rise."

Mr. Panahov touched on information that illegal extra fees are demanded in the urban transportation by some bodies and said that the ministry had investigated the facts and Republic Prosecutor's Office initiated investigation on the basis of these facts.

As for the information that Baku Transport Department will be abolished, Mr. Panahov said that this issue was not under discussion and in fact abolishment of Transport Department was impossible.

"There must be such a body to control the transport in the city."
