Another Public TV channel to be launched this year

27 April 2006 [08:54] - TODAY.AZ
The second public television channel will start operation in Azerbaijan by the year-end, the Public TV general director Ismayil Omarov has said.

The new channel's broadcasts will focus on enlightenment and sports programs, he told a news conference dedicated to the one-year activity of the country’s first Public TV channel (PTV).

According to Assa-Irada, Omarov said two new public radio stations are to be set up as well. "Overall, the existing legislation requires the operation of two public TV channels and three radio stations."

Omarov went on to say that $3 million has been spent to equip PTV so far. Equipment worth the same amount will be acquired within a month. The technologies already introduced will allow the channel to operate for at least the next 10-15 years, while the sources of funding after 2010 have not been determined yet. Therefore, the channel's logistics will be fully formed until then, the PTV director said.

Touching upon PTV’s coverage, Omarov said the channel has opened offices for correspondents in five countries.

"The ones in Russia, Georgia and the United States are already operating. The divisions in Strasbourg as well as Uzbekistan, covering Central Asia, will start operation in the coming days."

The TV manager added that an office in Turkey is to be opened by the year-end.
