TB infected prisoners to be treated from July 1

Free treatment of prisoners affected by complicated form of tuberculosis will be launched from July 1.

GOPA consulting service Regional Program to Fight TB in the South Caucasus Coordinator, Ogtay Gozelov told APA that first 100 prisoners would be treated at the Specialized Treatment Establishment for TB Infected Prisoners at the Justice Ministry within the program DOTS (directly observed treatment, short course).

20 prisoners will be treated at the initial stage. The rest will be cured gradually. Treatment will take 24 months for each affected prisoner.

By the financial support of the International Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria, medications will be brought for patients affected by complicated form of TB. Medications for TB patients are brought to Azerbaijan by the financial support of the German government. The program is to be expanded.
