11 March 2006 [09:30] - TODAY.AZ
The bill on guarantees for gender equality was discussed at the session of Milli Majlis on Friday.

Parliament human rights standing commission chairman Rabiyyat Aslanova gave information about the bill and said that the bill was adopted in many developed countries as well as some CIS countries.

She said that the aim of adoption of this bill was to ensure human rights and freedoms and abolish inequality between women and men. MP Aynur Guliyeva stated that 70% of secondary school teachers and 50% of university teachers were women. She said that women's representation in the offices and enterprises was under 3%.

"Women should be represented in all spheres equally. First, the government should set an example."

Parliament deputy chairman Bahar Muradova said that the main point wasn't adoption of the bill but its acceptance by the community.

"I am against any quota for women's representation in the community. The more women can, the more they should be represented in the community."

MP Agil Abbas said that unwritten family laws regulated women's place and role in the Azerbaijani community. He said that he supported reflection of some items pursuant to national mentality. After discussion, the bill was adopted in the first reading, APA informs.
