President Aliyev decree to establish biometric identification system

President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree on setting up a State Commission and preparing a State Program for establishment of biometric identification system in Azerbaijan.

Prime Minister Arthur Rasizade will be the chief of the Commission, and Minister for Communication and Information Technologies Ali Abbasov, Minister for Economic Development Heydar Babayev, Finance Minister Avaz Alakbarov, National Security Minister Eldar Mahmoudov, Justice Minister Fikret Mammadov, Transport Minister Ziya Mammadov, Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov, chief of State Frontier Service Elchin Guliyev, Health Minister Ogtay Shireliyev, Interior Minister Ramil Usubov will be the members, the President's press service informed APA.

The State Commission has been charged with preparing a State Program on establishment of biometric identification system in Azerbaijan and submitting to the President within six months. The decree reads that international terrorism, new threats of transnational organized crimes, illicit trafficking in weapons and drugs, illegal migration make it urgent to take preventive, adequate measures, and expand international cooperation in this sphere.

Application of modern information technologies in the work of law enforcement bodies and other authoritative state organizations ensures reliable checking of persons passing the borders. This system is one of the efficient ways to reveal and prevent dangerous threats. The objective of the biometric identification center is promoting the national security system and ensuring travel of Azerbaijani citizens to abroad or vice versa on the mutual base with other states, through using new-generation passports.
