Action plan on Caspian Sea protection discussed

Ashgabat hosted the regional meeting of working groups developing the national action plans within the Framework Convention on Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea (Tehran Convention), the state news agency Turkmen Dovlet Khabarlary said.

The forum was organized by the Turkmen Ministry of Nature Protection together with the Tehran Convention interim Secretariat under the auspices of European Office of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), Global Ecology Fund and a regional project of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The organizers said that the international consultants and experts of state bodies on environment in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkmenistan and Iran attended the meeting.

Tehran Convention is the first multilateral treaty document in the Caspian Sea region. Such issues as development of the national action plans on the Tehran Convention and preparation of the Regional Program on Environmental Monitoring of the Caspian Sea were raised.
