Turkey launches gender equality project

26 November 2011 [09:58] - TODAY.AZ
Turkey's parliament has launched a joint campaign in coordination with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and UN Women to promote gender equality in the country, Press TV reports.

An agreement on the establishment of the Project to Establish the Environment to Support Social Gender Equality in Turkey was signed by the UN resident coordinator in Ankara, Shahid Najam, and Turkish Parliament Speaker Cemil Cicek in a ceremony in the Turkish Parliament on Friday, which was also the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Ending domestic violence against women and encouraging gender equality are two of the main goals of the project. Najam hailed Ankara's determination to end violence against women and expressed hope that Turkey would continue to take measures to empower women.
