Turkish charity developes new project against hunger in Somalia

Turkish non-governmental organizations are producing projects to find permanent solutions to hunger and drought in Somalia.

Humanitarian Relief Foundation (IHH) prepared a project which would be implemented on an area of ten decares in Jazeera district of Somalia.

IHH Somalia representative Taner Altun told AA on Thursday that they would build orphanage, school, dormitory and masjid in that area, adding that they also extended agricultural and vocational support as well as potable water to Somali people.

The project will cost nearly one million USD, said Altun, adding that they were planning to lay foundation within a few days, and complete the construction in one year.

Altun also said that they drilled 200 water wells in the last 200 months. Somalia is facing with one of the worst droughts in the past 60 years.

The epicenter of the drought lies on the three-way border shared by Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia, a nomadic region where families heavily depend on the health of their livestock. Uganda and Djibouti have also been hit by the disaster.

Tens of thousands of people have so far been displaced due to the humanitarian situation in the region.
