Turkish Izmir Municipality withdraws complaint against construction of SOCAR-Turcas oil refinery

Municipality of the Turkish city of Izmir withdrew its petition to the State Council (instance reviewing court matters related to public administration) with a complaint for construction of an oil refinery of joint venture SOCAR-Turcas and expressed consent and support to the construction of the oil refinery, the Zaman newspaper reported.

Earlier, Izmir municipality has repeatedly stated that the construction of the oil refinery in the city is contrary to the architectural and town-planning norms of the city.

A ceremony of laying the foundation of a new oil refinery, which will provide the petrochemical complex Petkim, co-owned by SOCAR, with raw materials, was held in Izmir on Oct. 25.

The new oil refinery will primarily focus on providing this complex with raw material.The cost of the new oil refinery is $5.5 billion. The oil refinery's capacity will hit 10 million tons per year. Oil products manufactured at the plant will be directed to cover the needs of Petkim, the domestic market of Turkey and the countries of the Mediterranean region.
