Climate change discussed in Tbilisi

Tbilisi is hosting the seventh international conference of 'Adapting to Climate Change, Challenges and Opportunities in the Caucasus'. It was opened by Georgian Environment Minister Goga Khachidze and EU Deputy Ambassador Boris Yaroshevich.

The Dutch Ambassador to Georgia Peter Langenberg, the Swiss Ambassador Gunter Behler and the general manager of wildlife, landscapes and forests of the government of Liechtenstein Felix Nesher attended the conference.

"Climate change is a problem," Mr Khachidze said. "This issue will become more urgent in the future. Today's conference is being held under the REC Caucasus. This means that not only Georgia, but the whole region will examine the problems and determine future plans."

Climate change, the natural environment, human and social factors were discussed with delegates exchanging ideas. The representatives of various ministries, international organisations and NGOs attended the event.

"It is very important that Georgia holds such a conference," Mr Yaroshevich said. "The three Caucasus countries have attended this event. It gives reason to think that they are thinking about the whole regional natural environment."

The two-day conference is being held under the Caucasus Regional Environmental Centre and was financed by the Liechtenstein agricultural ministry.
