Explosion at Iranian oil field kills 1, injures 3

An explosion occurred at the Bibi Hakimeh oil field in the southwestern Iranian province of Khuzestan on Friday, killing one person and injuring three others, Mehr news agency reported.

The explosion occurred when the drilling rig No. 54 hit a high-pressure gas pocket at a depth of 1,810 m, Hamid Reza Golpayegani, an official of the National Iranian Drilling Company, said on Friday.

According to Press TV, Bibi Hakimeh oil field is one of the biggest oil fields in Iran, consisting of more than 145 oil producing wells located near the Persian Gulf.

In another incident, the Shazand oil refinery in the central city of Arak caught fire, leaving no injury or death.

The Shazand oil refinery was officially inaugurated in February 2010 with $3.3 billion investment.
