EU mission proposes to establish joint group to determine demarcation line in Georgia

EU Monitoring Mission (EUMM) has made an initiative to establish a joint group that will work on defining the demarcation line in the Georgian-Ossetian conflict zone, the head of mission Andrzej Tishkevich said today after a meeting held in Dvani within prevention of incidents in the Caucasus and respond to them in format of the Geneva talks.

The meeting itself ended without results. The Georgian side once again raised the question of release of three Georgians who were detained on charges of illegally crossing the so-called border. But an agreement has not been reached.

An hour before the start of the meeting, the Russian border guards two meters moved to the conditional border and placed at the venue a stencil indicating the border, against which the Georgian side has protested.

Military actions were launched in the Georgian territory, South Ossetia on Aug.8 in 2008. Later the Russian troops occupied the Tskhinvali city and drove the Georgian military back. Russia recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in late August.

In response, Tbilisi broke off diplomatic relations with Moscow and announced two unrecognized republics as the occupied territories.
