Iranian Supreme Leader's assistant: If Turkey doesn't change foreign policy, problems with Iran are unavoidable

10 October 2011 [09:30] - TODAY.AZ
If the Turkish authorities do not create transparency in its policy towards Iran and do not change attitudes toward Tehran, the Turkish-Iranian relations could be damaged, said Iran's Supreme Leader's Assistant Seyed Yahya Safavi, Mehr news agency reported.

"Turkey pursues wrong policy towards Iran. If Turkey does not change its policy, then it will run into problems in the domestic and foreign policy," he said.

Safavi also said that deploying European missile defence system in Turkey is a strategic mistake of Ankara. "We believe that Turkey is acting in the direction designated by the United States," he said.

According to Safavi, Turkey has made several strategic mistakes. One of them is Erdogan's advice to Egypt to keep secular governance in the country. The second mistake is its agreement for deploying European missile defence system in Turkey, which indicates that Ankara thus gives message to Russia and Iran. The third mistake is creating tensions in Syria under pressure from the Zionists and the U.S., said Safavi.

"These actions are contrary to the slogans of Turkey and show that it conducts a dual policy," said Safavi.

Earlier, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmed Davutoglu said that deploying European missile defence system in Turkey is not directed against any country.

"It is aimed at improving NATO missile defense. It is not directed against any country," he said.

According to Davutoglu, Turkey is making this statement in response to the reaction of the Iranian side.

Tehran has repeatedly expressed its concern to Ankara over the decision to deploy European missile defence system in Turkey.

"Such a step would be in favor of Israel and other foreign forces in the region," said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast.
