05 October 2011 [10:11] - TODAY.AZ
Iran and Oman emphasize the significance of close military cooperation among the countries in the Persian Gulf region in order to maintain lasting peace in the region, Press TV reported.

In a meeting with Oman's Air Force commander, Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi on Tuesday highlighted the strategic significance of the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman for the global economy and its stability, Iran's Defense ministry said in a press release.

Iran considers the security of the region as a collective matter that requires the cooperation of all regional states, Vahidi said.

The Iranian minister criticized the foreign military presence in the region as a destabilizing factor, saying, "The military presence of the United States and its allies has resulted in nothing but the killing of defenseless civilians, discord, violence, insecurity and terrorism," he said.

Vahidi referred to the Iran's achievements in the field of air defense and said it helps safeguard peace, stability and security in the region.

Air Vice Marshal Yahya bin Rashid Al Jumaa, who was in Tehran on an official visit, expressed Muscat's willingness to expand military ties with Tehran.

Al Jumaa, who visited the Iranian Air Force's industrial, research and training centers, admired the country's remarkable progress in defense industries, especially in the field of air defense. He also praised Iran's key role in maintaining Persian Gulf security.

The Iran-Oman Joint Military Commission Committee has so far held nine meetings in a bid to boost bilateral defense cooperation between Tehran and Mascat as the two neighbors seek closer military ties.
