UNDP assists Georgia in legal aid sphere

28 September 2011 [12:53] - TODAY.AZ
The Legal Aid Consultation Centre was opened in Tsalka, Georgia this week, UNDP in Georgia reported.

Minister of Corrections and Legal Assistance of Georgia Khatuna Kalmakhelidze and Deputy Head of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Georgia Inita Paulovica attended the event.

The consultation centre will provide legal counselling to 23,000 residents of the Tsalka municipality. It will particularly focus on representatives of national minorities and on the socially and economically vulnerable.

Tsalka is the fifteenth site of the Legal Aid Service across Georgia. Operating under the Ministry of Corrections and Legal Assistance, the service has grown to 11 bureaus and 4 consultation centers situated to reach people in all parts of the country.

UNDP also helps the Legal Aid Service to train staff lawyers, work effectively with the changes in the judicial system, familiarize with the elements of jury trials, and effectively conduct public outreach campaigns.

The assistance to the Legal Aid Service is part of UNDP’s wider initiatives in support of the justice system reform in Georgia.
