Iran opens Islamic Awakening confab

17 September 2011 [12:00] - TODAY.AZ
The Islamic Awakening conference has kicked off in Tehran, Iran, IRNA reported.

Some 600 scholars, including 400 Iranians, attend the event.

Iran’s Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatolla Ali Khamenei, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Parliament’s speaker Ali Larijani and Head of the Judicial System Ayatolla Sadeq Larijani take part in the conference.

This is the first international conference on the wave of Islamic awakening and the popular revolts sweeping across North Africa and the Middle East.

The two-day conference is to focus on the uprisings in Western-backed Arab countries, namely Bahrain, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia and Yemen. The months-long unrest in Syria and foreign interference in the country's political crisis are also expected to incite debates at the event.

The developments will be discussed from both regional and international perspectives.
