Turkey's unemployment rate drops to 9.2%

The unemployment rate dropped 1.3 points to 9.2 percent in June 2011 when compared to June 2010. TurkStat stated on Thursday that unemployment rate was 11.6 percent in urban areas, while it was 4.9 percent in rural areas in June 2011.

The number of unemployed people, which had been 2.7 million in June 2010, dropped to 2.5 million in June 2011. The number of employed people increased from 23.4 million to 24.9 million in the mentioned periods.

Working age population increased 1.036 million in June 2011 compared to June 2010. While non-institutional population increased 1.014 million and reached 72.3, non-institutional working age population increased 1.036 million and reached 53.5 million in June 2011.

Labour force participation rate was 51.2 percent in June 2011.

Labour force participation rate (LFPR) was realized as 51.2 percent with 1.2 points rise . LFPR was realized as 72.7 percent with 1.1 point rise for male in June 2011 compared to June 2010 and realized as 30.5 percent with 1.4 points rise for female.

As for the distribution of labour force by education and age group; 17.3 percent of the total labour force were comprised of persons within the 15-24 age group.Labour force participation rate of persons having education below high school was 71 percent for male while it was 27.5 percent for female. Labour force participation rate of persons with higher education was 84.8 percent for male while it was 69.9 percent for female.

Number of employed persons increased 1.4 million and reached 24.9 million in June 2011 when compared to June 2010. Agricultural employment increased 367,000 and non-agricultural employment increased 1.046 million in this period.

Of those who were employed in June 2011; 26.5 percent was employed in agriculture, 18.9 percent was employed in industry, 7.5 percent was employed in construction and 47.2 percent was employed in services. Employment in agriculture realized without any change and construction increased 0.8 point, while that of industry decreased 0.4point and services decreased 0.2 point.

The ratio of persons who worked without any social security related to the main job declined to 43.5 percent with 1.3 point decrease. The share of persons who did not have any social security in agriculture decreased from 86.1 percent to 84.3 percent and that in non-agriculture decreased from 29.9 percent to 28.9 percent in June 2011 when compared to June 2010.

Number of unemployed persons decreased 214,000 and reached 2.5 million in June 2011 when compared to June 2010. Unemployment rate was realized as 9.2 percent with 1.3points decrease. Unemployment rate was realized as 11.6 percent with 1.5 points decrease in urban areas and reached 4.9 percent with 0.6 points decrease in rural areas.

Among people who had previously worked and were currently out of labour force; 15 percent had worked in agriculture, 11.2 percent had worked in industry, 2.6 percent had worked in construction and 19.9 percent had worked in services and 51.2 percent of them quit their last job before the last eight years.

2.4 million people either started to work or changed their current job in June 2011 and it accounted for the 9.7 percent of total employment. 25-34 age group comprises 27.9 percent of people who started to work or changed the current job in this period.

Among people who either began to work or changed the job, 15.5 percent have started in industry, 33.4 percent have started in services, 24.2 percent have started in construction and 26.9 percent have started in agriculture.

15.3 percent of unemployed population were comprised of people who quit their job in this period.

In June 2011, number of seasonally adjusted employed people increased 151,000 and number of seasonally adjusted unemployment people increased 13,000. Seasonally adjusted labour force participation rate was realized as 50.1 percent with 0.2 points rise, and employment rate was realized as 45 percent with 0.2 points rise. Unemployment rate was realized as 10.3 percent without any change compared to the previous period.
