Turkey, Georgia discuss border crossing issues

Turkish Customs and Trade Minister Hayati Yazici had a meeting with Georgian Finance Minister Dimitri Gvindadze in Ankara on Wednesday.

Yazici said in the meeting that there was need for more time for Turkish and Georgian citizens' crossing from Sarp-Sarpi customs gates only with their ID cards.

Yazici recalled that customs gates were modernized by both countries to boost commercial ties. Yazici said they carried out works to facilitate customs procedures, but there were still some problems and today's meeting would focus on these problems.

Recalling that the two countries earlier signed a protocol to allow their citizens to cross the border between the two countries without passports, Yazici said the protocol was not in practice right now. There was need to develop technical infrastructure regarding the matter, he added.

Gvindadze said that there were great commercial and economic relations between Turkey and Georgia, stating that Turkey was the most important trade partner of Georgia.

Gvindadze said that they aimed to boost ties with Turkey.
