Iranian Foreign Ministry: NATO anti-missile defense system in Turkey will not improve region's security

05 September 2011 [17:36] - TODAY.AZ
Deployment of a NATO anti-missile defense system in Turkey will not increase security in the region, IRNA news agency quoted the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hassan Qashqavi.

Qashqavi said some foreign governments have found it possible to approach Iranian borders and deploying U.S. radar in the vicinity of Iran’s borders could cause regional disagreements.

He stressed that Turkey and Iran are friendly countries and can ensure the non-interference of other countries in their own security matters.

Qashqavi said that such actions within NATO demonstrate the inability of the alliance to ensure full security.

An early warning radar about the threat of missile attack will be placed in Turkey as part of the MDS created by the U.S. and NATO, Turkish Foreign Ministry's official Selcuk Unal told journalists on last Friday.

He said the decision to deploy the MDS in Turkey was taken at a NATO summit in Lisbon in 2010, and Turkey initially supported the work connected with the implementation of this initiative.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said two days earlier that Tehran expressed its concern to Ankara over the decision to deploy the radar, and stressed that Israel and other foreign forces in the region will gain significantly from such a move.
