Georgian President discusses increase in pension rate with gov't

05 September 2011 [09:38] - TODAY.AZ
Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili on Saturday met with Prime Minister Nika Gilauri, Minister of Health, Labour and Social Affairs Andria Urushadze and Finance Minister Dmitry Gvindadze to discuss the pension reform.

Members of the government provided the president with the detailed information. They stressed that the minimum pension will hit 100 lari ($ 1 = 1.66 lari) from September 15, the Georgian presidential administration said.

About 680,000 people's pensions will be increased in Tbilisi and Georgian regions.
President Saakashvili said that at present, the government must focus on the care of socially vulnerable population.

"Previously, there were different pension rates in Tbilisi and regions, but now they are equalized as prices increased in the regions," Saakashvili said. "It will be fairly if we use the income obtained from taxes to increase pensions as our country does not extract oil and gas and we do not have a very large budget."

Prime Minister Gilauri said that this balance was preserved. About 20-21 percent of budget revenues are spent for social programs, including the health and education programs. The rest amount is spent for economic development of the country, he said.

Labour Minister Andria Urushadze said that the amount of pension has increased by 7 times since 2004. All debts, existing before the indicated period, were covered. The pension growth rates exceed consumer price growth, he said.
