Russia concerned about US plans to install radar in Turkey

03 September 2011 [13:31] - TODAY.AZ
Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its concern about the US plans to install early-warning radar system in Turkey.

The ministry said United States is pushing ahead with its plans for a missile shield despite promises to cooperate with Moscow as a full partner in European missile defense program.

Moscow calls on US and NATO to ensure that new radar is not threatening the Russia’s strategic nuclear forces and to discuss the European missile defense system concept in the Russia-NATO Council’s meeting.

Turkish and U.S. governments announced their plans to deploy a NATO early-warning radar system in Turkey, which will help spot missile threats coming from outside Europe, including potentially from Iran. The radar system will deliver information to the US cruisers supplied with Aegis missile defense systems. Similar systems have already been deployed in Israel and Japan. NATO is planning to finish the installation of European missile defense system until 2018.
